- How did the stone cutters move the 39 by 49 foot (19 m by 15 m) slab?
-
To remove the 7 foot (2.13 m) of outcropping, holes were drilled horizontally into the rock every 4 inches (10c m). Metal bars were hammered into the holes and driven into the rock.
The rock was removed in pieces from the main formation by crane. The pieces weighed between 500 lbs. (226 kg) and 2,000 lbs (907 kg).
Each of the 135 pieces was carefully labeled so the whole jigsaw could be reassembled at the park.
- How was it moved?
-
It took 20 flatbed trailers to transport all of the pieces to the park.
- How was it put back together?
-
As each rock section arrived it was reassembled on a bed of crushed stone. The rocks were carefully wedged together to minimize visible joints. Once in place, the joints were treated with a flaming process to blend them into the surface of the granite.
